No-exam life insurance

What qualifies someone for rapid decisions without an exam, how the process functions, and what happens when you don't qualify.

Many carriers now offer expedited underwriting: for applicants meeting age and amount requirements, they decide using the application, drug history records, driving information, and other data instead of a medical evaluation. Many determinations come back within a business day. Each quote lists whether an exam is required, may be required, or is not required for that offer.

What it changes

Skipping an exam doesn't bypass underwriting. Your answers are confirmed, and a policy based on false statements can be challenged within two years. If your data raises questions, carriers may still order an exam or lab work; at that point you can decide whether to move forward.

Who tends to qualify

Typically applicants under about 60 who are requesting coverage up to the carrier's accelerated threshold, without serious health concerns and who haven't used tobacco in at least a year. Carriers often will consider recent blood work from a doctor's visit instead of requiring an exam.

When an exam is needed, expect a 20- to 30-minute appointment from a paramedical technician at your home or workplace in the Laguna Niguel area, at zero cost. In many healthy applicants, exam findings improve their rate tier, making the exam advantageous rather than a disadvantage.
